If you’re exploring Komazawa University with your family, be sure to stop by Paon Shogetsu, a beloved local bakery with a long history. This cozy spot offers a wide variety of traditional Japanese breads that kids and adults alike will enjoy. One unique treat you won’t find everywhere is the yakisoba pan, a Japanese-style sandwich filled with stir-fried noodles—a fun and tasty experience for curious little eaters!

Paon Shogetsu is cash-only, so make sure to bring some yen. Their specialties include the kinako bread, a soft and fluffy bun coated with roasted soybean flour, giving it a slightly sweet and nutty flavor—a perfect snack for kids. Another rare gem is the cream-and-red-bean-filled bun. It’s absolutely delicious, though hard to get because it sells out quickly; I’ve only managed to try it once! Paon Syogetsu has been around since 1946. The founder’s grandfather, who was originally a traditional Japanese sweets maker, started the bakery in the tough postwar years when supplies were scarce. That’s why they have wonderful red-bean-filled bun just like Japanese sweets.

The bakery opens bright and early at 7:00 AM, and locals flock in right at opening time, so if you want to catch the best selection, visiting in the morning is highly recommended. By the afternoon, most of the bread is usually sold out. Don’t miss their apple pie too—it’s another crowd favorite.

You can also buy drinks to enjoy with your treats. There are a few tables outside where you can sit, so the whole family can enjoy your snacks on the spot. The surroundings are busy with cars and pedestrians, so it’s not a peaceful garden setting, but the lively atmosphere adds to the experience.
Whether you’re looking for a taste of authentic Japanese bakery culture or a fun snack stop for the kids, Paon Shogetsu is a delightful and memorable stop near Komazawa University.
