Magical Nights in Tokyo: Setagaya Firefly Festival & Sagi-sou Flower Market with Kids

What is the Hotaru Festival?

“Hotaru” means firefly in Japanese. This festival recreates the magic of seeing fireflies at night—something rare in urban Tokyo. Inside a specially prepared tent, you and your kids can observe real, glowing fireflies in a darkened space. It’s a fantastic way for children to learn about nature while enjoying a bit of summer wonder.

The tent of the fireflies is located inside the Setagaya Daikanyashiki, an old house built in 1737.

The Setagaya Daikan Yashiki is the former residence of a daikan, or local governor. A daikan was an official appointed by the central government (the shogunate) to oversee tax collection, justice, and local administration in rural areas. The house is well preserved, with tatami rooms, a traditional gate, and a beautiful garden.

If you’re interested in Japanese history and local life beyond the samurai and temples, this quiet heritage site is worth a visit.

📍 Location: Setagaya Daikanyashiki (an Edo-era traditional house)

One of the reviews on Tripadvisor says:

This was residence of local lord of Setagaya area. Well kept mansion. Not great edifice, small, rustic one. I went by local bus, and from the bus stop, a 5 minutes walk was needed, and for the first time, the location seemed to be hard to find.

What is the Sagi-sou Market?

Alongside the fireflies, you’ll also find the Sagi-sou (Egret Orchid) Market. These rare white flowers bloom in midsummer and are known for their elegant, bird-like shape—just like a white egret taking flight! You can even purchase a potted plant to take home.

Family-Friendly Tips

  • Stroller-friendly? The venue is mostly stroller-accessible, but some areas inside the house may require you to fold your stroller.
  • When to go: Early evening is best to avoid crowds and see the fireflies glowing their brightest.
  • Food stalls: Enjoy local street food, like yakisoba and shaved ice—perfect for kids!
  • Restrooms: Available, but bring wipes and tissues just in case.

Why we recommend it:
This festival offers a rare blend of culture, nature, and hands-on experience—right in the middle of Tokyo. If you’re visiting with kids in summer, it’s an unforgettable way to enjoy a peaceful, authentic part of Japanese life.
