Family-Friendly Farming Fun: Fruit & Veggie Picking Right in the Middle of Tokyo

When most people think of Tokyo, they imagine skyscrapers, neon lights, and the hustle and bustle of Shibuya or Shinjuku. But did you know that even in the heart of the city, you can still find farmland?

Setagaya, a central area of Tokyo, has a surprising number of small farms. Historically, this district was known for agriculture, and many fields remain today. Thanks to this, you can find farmers’ markets and local vegetable stands where fresh produce is sold at very reasonable prices.

Even better for families, some of these farms offer hands-on agricultural experiences. Last weekend, we joined a sweet potato digging event. For children growing up in the city, chances to touch the soil or encounter bugs are very rare—so this was an exciting adventure!

My 5-year-old son was completely absorbed in digging and proudly showed off the huge sweet potato he harvested: “I’m going to show this to Daddy when we get home!” Meanwhile, our daughter was scared of caterpillars at first and cried a little, but in the end, she said it was fun.

These local farming experiences are a hidden gem of Tokyo. They offer children a connection with nature, give families a break from the busy city, and create unforgettable memories. If you are visiting Tokyo with kids, I highly recommend checking if there are any farm activities available in Setagaya or other neighborhoods. It’s a side of Tokyo that most tourists never see!

And it’s not just sweet potatoes—depending on the season, you can pick apples, pears, and grapes too! These local farms and produce markets give kids a chance to connect with nature, learn about food, and create unforgettable memories.

If this sounds like fun for your family, please contact the farm via the inquiry form for more details. It’s a perfect weekend adventure for kids to explore the outdoors, enjoy delicious harvests, and experience Tokyo from a completely different perspective.
